While you may think that a ZIP code can only be used to find a particular address in a certain area, geocodes actually give you much more information. Geocodes are a combination of latitudinal and longitude coordinates that describe a location. Businesses that utilize location-based marketing strategies may want to geocode the location of their customers in order to maximize their marketing strategy's effectiveness. By geocoding your audience, you can also improve your business operations and extend your reach.

While a ZIP code is a great place to start when mapping an address, you may be surprised to learn that a ZIP+4 code can also provide information about the street name. ZIP+4 codes are relatively accurate because they represent a postal delivery route, which contains ten to twenty addresses. In addition, they are also accurate to the block level and are useful for locating an approximate location. Geocoding at this level is known as interpolation.

If you are geocoding by zip code, you must first create an import file containing all the locations in a specific state. In this file, you should include each level of a hierarchy above it. For example, when adding a State/Province, you must add a new column that represents the State/Province. This way, any new locations will be added to the proper roles.
